A project on innovative activities under ATMA At Government Leprosy Hospital, Koratty

The Government Leprosy Hospital Koratty founded  in the year 1930 is located in Koratty Kizhakumuri village in Mukundapuram taluk of Thrissur district. The hospital under the ownership of Kerala State Health Department has an area of about 113.6 acres and is a home to about 235 inmates who were attacked by the deadly germ Mycobacterium leprae which resulted in various deformities and brought darkness to their lives. Now various activities are being carried out by a Registered Society with superintend of hospital as ex-officio chairman and one of the inmates as secretary. The 113.6 acres of land include agricultural land, hospital building, wards for the inmates, library, 3 churches, I temple, 1 mosque, recreation hall, roads and numerous other buildings in state of ruin.

Years ago, the society and the inmates were actively involved in agricultural and allied activities like goat rearing, rabbit rearing, etc. during the 90’s vegetable cultivation was a huge success and our Department also implemented vegetable cultivation under Horticulture Therapy Scheme. In the compound we can also see crops like coconut, coffee, pepper, nutmeg, jack fruit, cashew and mango trees. But improper management has resulted in huge weed growth and poor production giving the appearance of a deserted land. Hence through proper management practices we could improve the status of the existing crops like coffee, pepper, coconut, etc and also introduce cultivation of annual crops like banana, vegetables, and tubers in 2 acres area as a beginning to improve the financial status of the society and to bring light to the lives of the numerous patients.
